I’ve always felt strongly that the last quarter of the year is the absolute best time to focus on self-improvement.

For me, it’s the ideal time to take classes, do exercises, and work on myself to get better.

And the reason why is pretty simple:

Because if I can complete a playwriting course during Q4, then I’m in a great position to put what I’ve learned to use at the start of the next year–because I always get a jolt of motivation when New Year’s hits on January 1st.

Maybe you do, too?

I’ve always gotten better results from “just in time” education than “just in case” education.

In other words, if you’re going to take a class on something, take it close in time to when you’re actually going to use it–because the material will be the freshest in your mind then.

Now, it can be hard to find good playwriting courses. And when you do find them, they’re typically in the $300-$400 range (unless they’re associated with a college, in which case they can be thousands).

But I have a recommendation for a tremendous course available at a reasonable price: the Play Submissions Helper’s Professional Playwriting Course.

I’ve gone through this 10-lesson course multiple times, because the instruction by PSH’s Playwright-in-Residence, Andy Black, is that good.

It covers the entire playwriting process, from the 7 key elements of narrative to the writing and rewriting process.

And the best part?

It’s just $8.99 per month. Take as long or as short as you want to work through the courses, and cancel anytime. Which means this complete playwriting course is available to you dirt-cheap.

So if you want to write your best play ever in 2025, give yourself the head-start you need by training your playwriting muscles now in preparation.
